Discover Hong Kong’s Opulent History at The Mandarin Oriental Spa

When in Hong Kong you should not leave without making your way to the city’s most prized venue – The Mandarin Oriental. It all began in 1963 when The Mandarin Oriental chose Hong Kong as its flagship location, and as the hotel has celebrated its 50th year, this rare gem has continued to maintain leadership in the luxury hospitality industry. It is surprising to discover that the hotel itself was once the tallest building on the island when it first opened, as modern day Hong Kong is so densely populated with skyscrapers. The Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong offers five star facilities, including its Michelin starred restaurants revered by international diners and most significant of all – or at least we in our opinion – is the hotel’s spa, renowned for its bespoke treatments in a luxurious 1930’s Shanghai inspired setting.

Whilst in Hong Kong, we got the chance to try out their signature treatment – The Imperial Jade Treatment. All treatments are based around a holistic philosophy of ancient concepts and modern techniques from around the world, and enhanced by an array of heat and water experiences.

What we discovered upon arrival is the vast amount of returning guests – a sure sign that this is the place where locals and foreign expats treat themselves when they seek much needed downtime, and the spa’s foundation of “respect for uniqueness of each individual” means their “therapies are designed to bring balance and equilibrium to meet the needs of each individual”.

Located over two floors, with eight treatment suites, an indoor pool and fitness centre, the spa is the ultimate oriental affair – from the Zen sounds of instrumental music and waterfalls to the calm evoked by the spa’s concierge team. Every detail is taken care of upon arrival. The spa assigns you your own dedicated therapist whose focal point is your wellbeing as the treatment begins with a routine health assessment.

Rather than focusing on opulence, the treatment suites have been designed to encapsulate scents, sculptures and lighting to provide a room where mind, body and spirit find refuge. Enjoy centuries-old Chinese techniques to stimulate the body and blood flow – beginning with a herbal compress and reflexology to open the meridian energy lines. A Chinese-style massage will stimulate acupressure points in aiding tension release whilst balancing the Yin and Yang energies. A luxurious blend of sesame and ground rice scrub will lighten and stimulate your skin prior to the green tea and algae body mask, specifically blended to eliminate toxins. The treatment concludes with a ginseng facemask, known for its anti-ageing effects. Simultaneously, cool jade rollers are applied on the face to lift and tone ensuring equilibrium in mind and body.

The treatment expertly captures your individual senses from the beginning, making it the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city streets. The Mandarin lets you discover what Hong Kong hospitality really is and this is why the brand has transcended international borders. In a world with countless hotels, The Mandarin is one that centres on personalisation and care. The hotel makes it their priority to provide each guest, be it new or old, the overall Mandarin experience no matter which part of it your enjoying.
