World Gin Day 2016: Where to Celebrate It

There’s never been a better excuse to enjoy a gin-tastic tipple than World Gin Day. Returning for its eighth year, the celebration is taking place on 11th June 2016. For those of you sybarites with a penchant for the juniper spirit, you’ve come to the right place.

Originally started in 2009 by Neil Houston, AKA YetAnotherGin, as a gathering of friends to enjoy a gin-based drink, the idea has now grown into a worldwide celebration. When blogger Emma Stokes (AKA Gin Monkey) took over in 2013, the idea went from strength to strength.

Now for some interesting gin-based factoids to get you in the ‘spirit’ of things.

  1. The name gin comes from the French genièvre or the Dutch jenever, both of which mean juniper.
  2. Nearly all juniper used in gin is picked wild.  Almost none is cultivated.
  3. The best way to comparing gins by tasting is at room temperature, diluted with an equal measure of water. This reveals both the qualities and flaws.
  4. Gin’s primary flavour is the sweet pine and soft citrus of the juniper berry. All other botanicals are added to highlight nuances of this complex and sophisticated flavour.
  5. There are more classic cocktails made with gin than with any other spirit.

There are many splendid events happening to celebrate World Gin Day, from England to Australia. We’ve put together a few of the best.
